We are thrilled to announce a very special addition to the Save The Snakes Team! Through our partnership with the California Academy of Sciences, we have officially welcomed a stunning Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) as our newest educational ambassador.
This snake is more than just a resident; he is a vital part of our mission to change the narrative around misunderstood wildlife. However, he is missing one thing: the perfect name.
A Living Emblem of History
Timber Rattlesnakes are a quintessential American species, woven into the very fabric of United States’ national history and ecology. In 1775, writing under a pseudonym, Benjamin Franklin famously argued why the rattlesnake was the perfect symbol for the American spirit, noting:
“I recollected that her eye excelled in brightness, that of any other animal, and that she has no eye-lids. She may therefore be esteemed an emblem of vigilance. She never begins an attack, nor, when once engaged, ever surrenders: She is therefore an emblem of magnanimity and true courage… Conscious of [her weapons], she never wounds till she has generously given notice, even to her enemy, and cautioned him against the danger of treading on her.”
Originally hailing from the historic Steinhart Aquarium with the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, this Timber Rattlesnake has spent his life inspiring awe and curiosity. As he settles into his new home with Save The Snakes, he will continue his work as a global ambassador, helping us teach local communities and international audiences about the importance of snake conservation, peaceful co-existence, and the ecological value of these beautiful animals.
Commitment to Conservation and Safety
It is important to note that the Timber Rattlesnake is a restricted species in California. Because we prioritize the safety of the public and the welfare of the animal, Save The Snakes is strictly permitted by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to house this species for educational purposes. This ensures that our ambassador is kept in a secure, professional environment that meets the highest standards of wildlife care and legal compliance.
